The greatest barrier to effective studying experienced by many students is the lack of effective study techniques. In fact, many students may not quite explain why they cannot study effectively. However, this does not have to be the case as there are very many ways to increase your study effectiveness.
Firstly, you need to set up a study schedule. This will guide you on what to study at any given time. As you do this, you should remember to allocate more time to the most difficult classes. Do not spend all your time studying areas you consider to be easy. Also, remember to allocate time for recreation and social activities as you cannot realistically spend all your time studying. Then, once you set up a study schedule, you need to stick to it. You have to discipline yourself to do this as it is meaningless to set up a study schedule that you do not follow.
Secondly, it is important that you start studying for short periods of time and then build this up to longer periods of time. Doing this will improve your concentration over time. However, as you do this, remember that you need to be realistic. In fact, if in the process of studying you realize that you can no longer concentrate or even remember what you have read, then you should stop. Also, do take breaks when studying as this will help you refresh your mind.
Thirdly, find a good place for studying. A good place in this case is basically that which will allow you to concentrate. Indeed, if you can use the same place for studying, the better as this will facilitate concentration. Also, ensure that the place that you use for your studies is quiet and devoid of distractions that may interfere with your level of concentration. The truth is that, it is unlikely that you will study effectively if you cannot concentrate for one reason or the other.
Finally therefore, it is important to note that effective studying is an active process. It does not by any means involve passively reading some material. If you are to succeed, then you have to find ways of increasing your study effectiveness. However, if you have a problem that is affecting your studies and you realize it is something you cannot handle, then you should seek help from the counseling department in your institution.
