Effective Study Techniques for Students

Posted on 09 Dec 2021 by admin | Filled under: general

If your final exams or midterms are coming up, it is very important to use effective studying techniques. Students who do not study will not perform well on exams so they usually end up with lower grades. As soon as you get into high school, it is important to adopt effective study techniques to get good grades until you get into college. Here is a list of the most effective study techniques that straight A students usually use.

Go for short yet frequent study sessions

Short yet repetitive bursts of concentration are certainly more effective than a long study session. Even if you only have ten minutes left to study, just do it. After this, you can take a short break and study for another ten minutes. The distributed learning approach is highly efficient because it acknowledges the way the brain likes to work. Since the brain needs recovery time for effective protein synthesis, taking short rest periods will help you retain information better.

Use the natural learning sequence

Try to recall the activities you did when you were still in nursery school. You probably used your whole arm while singing nursery songs out loud. Then, when you were in kindergarten, you were asked to draw circles or lines with crayons. In first grade, you held a pencil and drew smaller circles and lines to write letters. This actually demonstrates the natural learning sequence. All throughout the learning stage, you moved from large to small, then coarse to fine details. When studying for an exam, it will be important to grasp the entire picture then fill in the details afterward.

Recognize your emotional state

Do not attempt to study if you are distracted, angry, tired, or in a hurry. It is better to study when the brain is relaxed because it will act like a sponge that absorbs date with little effort. If you are stressed and emotionally unstable, your brain will literally resist and repel data. Forcing yourself to sit down and study when your mind is actually preoccupied will only be a complete waste of time.

Allow yourself to rest

This technique follows the same principle of using short but frequent study sessions. However, it refers to a longer and daily time cycle. By allowing yourself to take guilt-free rest, it will be easier for you to refresh your mind and your body. But if you always feel guilty because you think you should be studying instead of resting, you will only waste your precious rest period for unnecessary stress. If stressed, the brain will refuse to absorb new data. By taking on and off days from studying, you can enjoy once in a while and stop feeling bad about not studying.

These effective study techniques will allow you to process and retain information faster. After all, being a straight A student is all about performing well on exams, whether they are practical or theoretical ones.

Plants are shaped by cultivation and men by education. .. We are born weak, we need strength; we are born totally unprovided, we need aid; we are born stupid, we need judgment. Everything we do not have at our birth and which we need when we are grown is given us by education.

(Jean Jacques Rousseau, Emile, On Philosophy of Education)
